Direct Email Campaigns

July 30, 2010 | Affiliate Marketing, Online Marketing, marketing campaigns, web 3.0 | 0 Comments »

Direct email campaigns are a very effective marketing strategy. It’s the next generation of direct mail, just the internet age version. They are an affordable and effective way to reach your customers or affiliates. We use this strategy everyday for our clients. Direct email is powerful because you control exactly who sees your marketing message, so there is no marketing waste.

When deciding who to email, it’s important to research the market. One strategy we use is to find groups on social networks, like LinkedIn and Facebook, that are related to your industry. For example, say you are a company that sells weight loss products. You would look for groups on social networks that were all about losing weight, eating healthy, etc. Compile a list of groups and include contact information of the owner. You want to email the owner of the group because he/she could potentially contact the members of the group.

Crafting the email is an important step, because it cannot sound spammy. No one is going to take it seriously or even read it. Make it friendly and engaging, and offer something for free. Also, make sure the title of the email isn’t spammy, or it might get put in the spam folder or ignored. Be straight forward about the content of the email.

Have a system established for responding to your emails. If you are looking for affiliates, make sure you have affiliate links established and ready to use. It would be very unprofessional to contact people and then take weeks to respond, so be prompt and timely with all responses. When you get a positive response, ask them if they know anyone that would also be interested in your product/service. Referrals are the most effective way to gain customers.

Tips for an SEO-Friendly Website Design

July 16, 2010 | Online Marketing, SEO, Web Design, marketing campaigns | 0 Comments »

Being at the top of the search engines is a major priority for a business. People are not looking through the yellowpages like they used to! It’s important to create a strong SEO plan for your site. Here are some tips for building an SEO friendly web site. They’re a bit technical, but important for your designer to know.

  • Make sure that title elements and ALT attributes are descriptive and accurate.
  • Check for broken links and correct HTML.
  • Allow search bots to crawl your sites without session IDs or arguments that track their path through the site.
  • Make sure your web server supports the HTTP header.
  • Test your site to make sure that it appears correctly in different browsers.
  • Avoid using too complex of tables when laying out your page.
  • Use external Cascading Style Sheets and Java Script files to reduce page size and make the download time much faster.
  • The URL structure http://www.example.com/green-dress.html is much more useful than http://www.example.com/greendress.html. You should use hyphens (-) instead of underscores (_) in your URLs.

Pay Per Click vs. SEO

June 22, 2010 | Business Strategy, Online Marketing, internet marketing, link building, pay per click | 0 Comments »

Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is becoming an increasingly popular way of ranking at the top of the search engines. How it works is an advertiser selects specific keywords/phrases and then creates a listing that will show up when someone searches for that phrase. This advertiser will pay a certain amount for each click on their listing. Obviously there are other advertisers that have selected the same keywords/phrases, so whoever is willing to spend the most per click will have the highest rankings.

This might seem like an easy way to get to the top, and it is. However, it PPC will not improve your organic search results. With PPC, your site will show up in the “Sponsored” or “Featured” area. Although that may not seem to matter, there are many people out there that do not click on those sites.

PPC also does not optimize your site. So, when you stop paying for PPC, your site will disappear from the top of the search engines and the traffic it brought in will stop! Also, it’s important to mention that competition is growing, so the cost per click is going to increase over time.

A long-term SEO plan is a better option for most advertisers. You can optimize your site to reflect who you are, and it will improve your position in the regular, organic search results. If you keep up with a powerful SEO plan, your site can get to the top of the search engines and you will have higher credibility. That being said, adding PPC on top of your SEO plan is great way to get some instant exposure.

3 Secrets To Top Ten Search Rankings

June 21, 2010 | Online Marketing, Online Strategy, internet marketing, link building, pay per click | 0 Comments »

Being at the top of the search engines is every company’s dream. Pay Per Click can get you there, for a price. And it is only temporary. To get to the top of the organic results in Google takes work, but is more than worth it! Your traffic will increase tremendously and you will be recognized as a leader in your industry. Here are 3 tips for reaching the top of the search rankings.

  1. Choose keywords that are not too highly competitive. It’s tempting to pick the popular keywords because they are the most searched, but unfortunately, everyone is picking those words as well. You will be a small fish in a big pond. You want the opposite!
  2. Optimize your page content and html for your keywords. Start with your homepage. Your site should have 3 important tags in the head; they include title meta description, and meta keywords. Don’t clutter your head tags because that will not improve your search ranking.
  3. Seek out external, one-way, incoming links with the keywords as the anchor text. First off, make sure you submit your site to dmoz.org. Each time you submit a form or email for a link, keep a record. A good place to start is with directories because they will give you a free link without the need to reciprocate. Other great places to get links is from discussion forums and press releases.

3 Secrets to Marketing on Facebook

June 7, 2010 | Online Marketing, marketing campaigns, online marketing trends | 0 Comments »

It goes without saying, Facebook is currently one of the hottest trends in social media. As a marketer, it is important to take advantage of this site. According to www.alexa.com, Facebook is #2 in the Top 500 Sites on the web (right under Google). So, how do you market on Facebook? Creating a “Facebook Fan Page” is easy, but here are 3 important tips for marketing with this social media giant.

  1. Don’t badger people with annoying messages. Facebook is an example of social media. Key word: social. People use Facebook to socialize with others, not to buy things. In order to leverage it for marketing purposes, use it was a way to connect with people that you want to do business with. Connecting with someone on Facebook adds value to what you have to offer him/her.
  2. Connect with your audience. It’s easy to update your status with “Click here and check out my XYZ product!”, but no one likes that you are just trying to sell them something. Instead, write something personal or interesting. Report on good news. Share something with your audience that will give them some insight into you, and they may be more interested in checking out what you have to offer.
  3. Offer free stuff. Everyone loves free stuff. Many people aren’t willing to shell out money right off of Facebook, but if you offer them something like a free webinar, they could turn into customers. I love the idea of free webinars because it gives you a chance to connect with people and teach them about yourself and/or your company. Also, there is a high probability of leading to a sale.facebook

The Shift from Blogging to Micro Blogging

May 25, 2010 | Blog Marketing, Online Marketing | 0 Comments »

While blogging continues to be one of the most effective marketing strategies that can be employed, it is critical to note a shift is taking place. Instead of content writers focusing the majority of time on formatting and crafting traditional, lengthy blog posts, they are supplementing that content with micro-blog posts. These posts can be made from anywhere in the world and are much shorter in length, typically under 200 characters.

Continue to use your blog as a marketing tactic, but offer up these condensed snippets in microblog format and you’ll be capturing market share from your competition as most are still not using micro-blogging.

Some of your target readers would prefer to read a 1,000-word article. Others just want the one or two key points in that article. With micro-blogging, you’re capturing both kinds of audiences – and potential customers.

The great thing about micro-blogging is that it can be done from anywhere in the world. Simply send in a text message and your post is instantly live. This beats spending three hours trying to format the post in WordPress or Blogger on your tiny BlackBerry screen!  Yes you can blog from your phone as well, but it’s much easier to send in a 200 character message versus a 500 word post.blackberry for micro blogging

How to Start Using Apps to Enhance Your Web 3.0 Marketing Activities

May 24, 2010 | Online Marketing, Viral Marketing, online marketing trends, web 3.0 | 0 Comments »

Step 1: Brainstorm.

We like to take a different approach to apps. Instead of first looking at what’s out there, we brainstorm on what apps we would like to see and what those apps would do. For example: when we first did this for Twitter, we wrote down over 40 different things we wanted the app to do. Most of the things on that list came back to “easier management of tweets.”

Step 2: Search.

Use my best friend, Google, to find out if there is an app that meets the criteria you just compiled. More times than not, there will be an app that already exists.

Step 2.5: Be innovative.

If there is not an app available, read below and possibly consider building your own app.  There are plenty of different developers you can hire.   Utilize sites like: guru.com, elance.com and craigslist.org.   There are thousands of different developers at your finger tips

Step 3: Re-evaluate.

Make sure the apps you are installing aid in one (or more) of the criteria we talked about:

  • Increase the relationship-building among your prospects/clients.

  • Aid in the experience your prospects/clients receive.

  • Make communication easier and more effective.

  • Help with the “fun factor” in your marketing.

Step 4: Follow the instructions and install the app.

Typically, you simply need to be logged in to the particular site, push a button to install the app and then turn it on or make it live.

Step 5: Don’t get app-crazy.

Don’t install hundreds of apps on your various marketing sites so all that your prospects and customers see are apps. Make sure your core information is available and easily visible. So limit the apps you use across the different sites to about five to 10, max, per site.

Step 6: Gather feedback.

Survey your network to see how they like the apps you are using and if they have any recommendations.  You would be surprised by how few businesses actually use surveys to aid in their marketing. It’s a very powerful tool.

Step 7: Keep an eye out for the bigger and better.

Keep up to date with what new apps become available. I like to use Google Alerts to easily accomplish this. For example, set a Google Alert for the phrase “twitter apps,” and let the Alert app tell you when new ones have been developed. Installing and using apps, as you will see, is very straight forward. Just remember that your main purpose is serving your prospects and consumers.  If you can’t identify a direct benefit to your users, skip it.

apps

The last key area of Web apps is creating your own applications for marketing uses or to simply sell or give away. The key with giving away Web apps is to make the app something of extreme value. The more useful or (if you’re taking the other approach) fun it is, the better chance it has of going viral.
